MEETING OF THE VALDAÏ INTERNATIONAL DISCUSSION CLUB (OCTOBER 2017, SOCHI) on https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3f7D-iLY2tI
The image of the world order is undergoing radical changes today, as the world of the future is being shaped under the influence of global conflicts. The 14th annual meeting of the Valdai Discussion Club, which will take place on October 16-19 in Sochi, is tasked with analyzing the transformation of socio-political worldviews and outlining the contours of the future.
Vladimir Putin took part in the final plenary session of the 14th annual meeting of the Valdai International Discussion Club titled The World of the Future: Moving Through Conflict to Cooperation.
Putin’s Speech At The Meeting Of The Valdai International Discussion Club: ‘[The West’s] Policy Based On Self-Assurance, Egotism And Claims To Exceptionalism Will Not Bring Any Respect Or True Greatness’:
In his speech, Putin accused the U.S. of not seeking equal cooperation with Russia. Concerning nuclear cooperation, Putin contrasted the Russian side’s demonstrated openness and trust towards the U.S., with Washington’s “total neglect” of Russia’s national interests (e.g. in supporting separatism in the Caucasus, and in the bombing of Yugoslavia and Belgrade).
Addressing Catalonia’s push for independence, Putin said that this is a Spanish internal matter that should be solved based on Spanish law. However, while drawing a parallel with Crimea’s independence from Ukraine, Putin criticized Western double standards as evidenced by support for Kosovo’s independence from Serbia contrasted with condemnation for other forms of self-determination. “It turns out that some of our colleagues think there are ‘good’ fighters for independence and freedom and there are ‘separatists’ who are not entitled to defend their rights, even with the use of democratic mechanisms,” said Putin.
Putin also tackled the centenary of the 1917 Russian Revolution, stating that its results were ambiguous. The Russian president noted: “Let us ask ourselves: was it not possible to follow an evolutionary path rather than go through a revolution? Could we not have evolved by way of gradual and consistent forward movement rather than at a cost of destroying our statehood and the ruthless fracturing of millions of human lives?”
