“European war would be sparked by some damned foolish thing in the Balkans”

– Otto von Bismarck’s 1888 prophecy.

LM.GEOPOL - Balkans on the brink (2017 09 20) ENGL 3

“Pridnestrovie is essential for Geopolitics of Russia in Balkans and Black Sea area (like Kaliningrad in Baltics). It is a geopolitical “pivot” for Moscow”

– Luc MICHEL (2011 interview on Radio PMR).

* ‘MONOCLE’ review (“Balkans on the brink”, New-York – London, March 2017, Issue 101) analysed in late March the “Trouble brewing in the Balkans“:

LM.GEOPOL - Balkans on the brink (2017 09 20) ENGL 2

Excerpts: “Last year, Serbian prime minister Aleksandr Vucic said of the threat of war that “you can feel it in the air”. Serbia is accepting eight Mig-29 fighters and two buk missile systems from Belarus, after a similar donation of six Mig-29s and 30 T-72 tanks by Russia. Meanwhile, Croatian prime minister Andrej Plenkovic favours reintroducing limited conscription for basic military training. Elsewhere, Republika Srpska – the mostly Serbian region of Bosnia and Herzegovina – threatens a referendum on secession. And relations between Serbia and Kosovo soured further in January when Serbia opened a rail link to the Serb-dominated half of the Kosovar city of Mitrovica, and decorated the train with nationalist emblems; Kosovo sent police to block the tracks.”

The review remembered “Otto von Bismarck’s 1888 prophecy that European war would be sparked by “some damned foolish thing in the Balkans” has proved recurrently accurate. A little over 20 years since the Dayton Agreement ended the most recent regional conflagration, pessimists have plenty to work with.”

* As Anglo-saxon review, with Geopolitics “seen from the USA”, ‘Monocle’ do not resist to anti-russia point of view :

“It does not require a lurid imagination to see another such standoff ending more messily, especially factoring in Vladimir Putin. Jaroslaw Wisniewski of the LSE’s European Institute says conflict may not be in anybody’s interest but that doesn’t mean that a measure of chaos is not being encouraged by Moscow: ‘‘Russian media like RT has a presence in Serbia. But it’s also regular media. It’s surprising when Putin isn’t on the cover of [Serbian tabloid] Informer.

Russia’s aim is to undermine western institutions – the EU and NATO. For Russia it’s win-win: their propaganda convinces the population to influence politicians and, if there’s a crisis, everyone will blame the EU.”.”

THE MOST DANGEROUS SPOT IS IN BUCAREST (TRANSFORMED IN PLATEFORM OF AGRESSION AGAINST RUSSIA) AND CHISINAU, WITH A FROZEN CONFLICT IN PRIDNESTROVIE

* But in the Greater Balkans, as seen by USA and NATO, extended to Romania and former Soviet republic of Moldova, the most dangerous spot is in Bucarest (transformed in Plateform of agression against Russia) and Chisinau, with a frozen conflict in Pridnestrovie :

“Pridnestrovie” (the PMR, capital Tiraspol, the so-called “Transnistria” of Western medias) the most industrialized zone of the former Soviet Republic of Moldavia and populated to two thirds with Slavs, proclaimed its independence towards Kichinev in 1992, after the dislocation of the USSR and at the end of several months of combat against the pro-Romanian Moldavian forces. Since, Tiraspol refuses to recognize the Moldavian sovereignty on its territory and applies an independent  policy, reinforced after the referendum on the independence of September 2006, very largely gained by the supporters of the unification with Russia. 17 September 2006, a referendum (monitored by EODE team) took place indeed in the Moldavian Republic of Pridnestrovie (PMR), and, within the framework of this national consultation, the overwhelming majority of the population of this selfproclaimed republic decided for the continuation of the policy of independence of Pridnestrovie and its union with Russia. A“frozen conflict” last around this self-proclamed republic, that, with the support of NATO and of Washington, one tries to destroy by force.  Pridnestrovie has claimed for 25 years its independence from Moldavia, through several referenda, and houses a Russian contingent of peace in spite of the Moldavian opposition. With the new regime in Ukraine, a pro-US Governement in Chisinau and the new Cold War 2.0, a blocade of PMR is organised and tension is again on the brink there …
